Firmware
The software built into a piece of hardware.
Firmware is the low-level code that runs on a device itself, such as a card's BIOS or an ASIC's controller software. It decides voltages, fan behaviour and what the device reports about itself.
Third-party firmware can unlock tuning the stock version hides, and it can also brick the device or void its warranty. It is the one change on a rig that is not always reversible.
